What changed: Billboard will include qualifying “Smart Media Albums” in its U.S. chart eligibility starting the tracking week beginning October 2, 2026 (Radio X reproduction of Billboard; checked 2026-09-12). Luminate will add Smart Media Album sales into its CONNECT feeds on the same date (Luminate; checked 2026-09-12).

How they’ll count: during the introductory phase each eligible Smart Media Album transaction counts as 0.5 equivalent album units toward Billboard’s album consumption tabulation and as one full album sale on Billboard’s album sales charts; releases may have up to two eligible Smart Media UPC versions per album (Radio X; checked 2026-09-12).

Context: Luminate notes renewed interest in physical formats — it reported 16.3 million CD purchases in the first half of 2026 (Luminate; checked 2026-09-12).

What to do now:

  1. Decide if a Smart Media product (stickers, tags, mini‑vinyl, lanyards, etc.) fits your audience and price tier — see approved vendors lists (Radio X; checked 2026-09-12).
  2. Plan no more than two UPC smart editions per album and set pricing/packaging to reflect that a transaction is 0.5 consumption units (Radio X; checked 2026-09-12).
  3. Confirm manufacturing/reporting workflows with your chosen vendor and Luminate CONNECT integration before the Oct. 2, 2026 start week (Luminate; checked 2026-09-12).
