UMG signs ElevenLabs to build AI remix platform — what artists should do
UMG and ElevenLabs are building an AI-powered platform for remixes, mashups and personalised vocals. Independent artists should demand clarity on splits, prepare stems and decide opt-in terms now.

What changed: Universal Music Group has signed an agreement with ElevenLabs that covers licensing and “product development”, and will jointly build “AI audio products for artists and songwriters” plus “a new AI-powered music creation platform built on licensed music and artist participation”, according to Music Ally (musically.com, 11 Sep 2026).
Which companies it affects: the deal is between UMG and ElevenLabs and follows ElevenLabs' earlier agreements with Kobalt and Merlin; Music Ally says the new platform “will be distinct and offered separately” from ElevenLabs’ existing ElevenMusic product.
Why it matters for independents: these platforms are focused on remix and mash-up experiences — “remixes and mashups, new track interpretations, and personalised vocal experiences” (Music Ally, 11 Sep 2026) — but Music Ally also notes that recordings/publishing splits for the UMG project have not been confirmed.
What you should do next
- Ask any label/aggregator you work with for written details on recordings vs publishing splits before agreeing to opt in.
- Prepare clean stems, metadata and vocal permissions so you can opt in quickly if terms are acceptable.
- Watch launches (UMG, ElevenLabs, plus other projects named by Music Ally) and test a small fan-facing remix offer first — don’t assume blanket opt-in is best.
